About weight loss injections Semaglutide and Tirzepatide

How it works

Tirzepatide and Semaglutide are weight loss injections that belong to the class of GLP-1 receptor agonists. GLP-1 is a hormone that is naturally produced in the body and plays a role in regulating blood sugar levels and appetite. They work by activating the GLP-1 receptors in the body, particularly in the brain.  When the GLP-1 receptors are activated, they help regulate the appetite control center in the brain, leading to a reduction in hunger and food cravings. In addition to its effects on appetite, they also help to slow down the emptying of the stomach after eating contributing to a feeling of fullness and satisfaction. This helps reduce the tendency to overeat or snack between meals, further reducing food noise. Overall, they help reduce food noise by regulating the brain’s appetite control center, reducing feelings of hunger and food cravings, and promoting a sense of fullness after eating.

Frequently Asked Questions

weight loss sucess

What is the most effective way to lose weight?

The most effective approach to weight loss involves sustainable lifestyle changes. While medication and weight loss injections on can support weight loss, it works best when paired with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Our weight loss program integrates these elements, ensuring your weight management plan is both attainable and long-lasting.

Can I use insurance?

Yes! We are in network with Cigna, Aetna, and Anthem BCBS commercial plans as a psychiatric provider and can offer weight loss services or a greatly reduced self-pay option. You may also use your insurance for medication and we will complete the required prior authorization. If for some reason your insurance will not cover the cost of your medication, you’ll have the option to either pay for the medication out of pocket (typically $900–$1,600/month, depending on the medication) or use an affordable compounded version. You can also use a HSA or FSA.

Who can join the weight loss program?

Our weight loss program can help anyone who is overweight or struggling to maintain a healthy weight. We also treat patients with weight gain due to other medical conditions or as a medication side effect. We do not treat patients with symptoms of an active eating disorder with weight loss medication, including bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa, although we can offer psychiatric care to these individuals. We can offer individuals with binge eating disorder medication management with various options including weight loss injections.

How much weight do I need to lose to benefit my health?

There is scientific evidence that losing 5-10% of your body weight can improve many obesity-related conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, and more. Weight loss injections can help you achieve this.

Shouldn't I just be happy with my body? Why should I lose weight?

We support body positivity at any size and want everyone to feel good and be confident. The decision to lose weight and use weight loss injections is a very personal one. Obesity has shown to have numerous negative health consequences and we want our patients to live long, healthy, happy lives. Research has proven these obesity-related consequences:

  • Cardiovascular disease: Obesity is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death worldwide.
  • Diabetes: Obesity is associated with type 2 diabetes, which can lead to blindness, limb amputations, and the need for dialysis.
  • Cancer: Obesity is associated with some cancers, including endometrial, breast, ovarian, prostate, liver, gallbladder, kidney, and colon.
  • Musculoskeletal disorders: Obesity can lead to osteoarthritis and other joint problems.
  • Breathing problems: Obesity can lead to asthma and sleep apnea, which can increase the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
  • Mental illness: Obesity can lead to clinical depression and anxiety.
  • Liver disease: Obesity is a major risk factor for steatosis, the beginning stage of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
  • Pregnancy complications: Obesity can lead to pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia.
  • Erectile dysfunction and infertility: Obesity may lead to erectile dysfunction or infertility.

Are injections safe to give to yourself?

Absolutely! Subcutaneous (SQ) weight loss injections are a safe and effective way to administer medication. After placing your order, we will provide you with a step-by-step instructional video and handout with information on safely administering your SQ injections. We can also do your first injection virtually. Most patients report no or minimal discomfort with the injection.

What are the side effects, I heard they are bad?

All medications can have side effects. With weight loss injections most people report mild, tolerable side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, reflux, and belching. We have lots of options to help ease side effects. We will go over side effects and medication safety during your appointment. We also have safety information on our policy page.

Are there other medication options that do not require an injection?

Yes!  We offer more than weight loss injections. There are multiple oral weight-loss medication options you can discuss this more with your provider. There is even an oral GLP-1.

Can you perform preoperative evaluations on prospective bariatric surgical patients?

Yes! We offer Psychiatric evaluations for bariatric surgery.
